It was hard to believe it had only been two nights since we had rescued the survivors at Bawbag’s manor. It felt like it had been weeks. Bawbag’s movements felt erratic but at the same time as if he were marching on Oban in slow motion. When he’d been sending his goons to skulk around Craobh Haven, we’d been certain he was aiming for sea access and the control of the marina there. I still didn’t think that was wrong—but something had made him forsake that entire plot and do a more literal march.

He could have reached Oban by now, but the wren kept confirming to me that he hadn’t, and the simulacra told me that he was watching his arse.

“I don’t like this,” I said to Eilidh as we made our way back into the camp. “Part of me really wants to just race ahead and see what we can do to harry him, but if we can’t manage to stop him, stop him—”

“That’ll put everyone here in his line of retreat one way or another,” she finished for me. “They’re safer with us. And Calum?”

“What?”

“We’re safer with them.”

For a moment, I thought about that. She was right, of course.

On impulse, I slowed our approach when people came into sight, casting Keen Eye on a few folks at random.
